Awkward Girl

I think I'm actually starting to be OK with Awkward Girl, the tongue-tied and socially ill-adept part of my personality. She comes out regularly now that I'm actively trying to grow as a person; I might as well put out a place setting for her at every meal. And so far, no one I care about has run screaming or done anything other than very tactfully point out whatever I've just said, sometimes with giggles.

I just need to get over myself. And it's sort of moving in that direction.

My "Awkward Girl" is currently living in my business life. She's the quite girl who goes on business calls with my boss - who is a force of nature. I'm learning a lot from observing her; but, I need to learn also by doing and speaking.

Ugh! I wish it felt safer to be awkward in that context.

Awkward never goes away, especially if, all your life, you were the quiet one in the corner that never said anything---and now that you're 56 or so, you want to grab life and shake it until it gives up everything it might hold for you. Which of course means you have to start learning to deal with those things you never had to deal with before, et voila! Awkward Girl surfaces and stumbles through things. *sigh* But she gets to learn, and people get to learn with her, and they get to love each other in spite of, around, over, and under awkward---and that's never a bad thing.

My Awkward Girl hugs yours. We're sisters, after all. :)
