Actually, I think he says it like this: "Love is caring about the other person's needs more than your own wants."
I don't think it means giving up everything you want, nor do I think it means that one person can control another by voicing/having greater needs---at least, not all of the time.
But I think it means that in a good relationship, both people can set aside their wants to help meet the other person's needs some of the time, in ways that produce harmony and balance.
