Today is the first day of the Year of the Rooster!
As a New Year's gift to my LJ friends, I offer the following websites and resources with which you may examine your year to come from the perspective of feng shui and Chinese Astrology.
*Your Animal Year and Predictions for the Coming Year*
To find out the name of animal year in which you were born (and what this means for your personality), go here: http://www.new-year.co.uk/chinese/calendar.htm
An explanatory quote from this page:
"The Chinese Lunar Calendar is a yearly one, with the start of the lunar year being based on the cycles of the moon. Therefore, because of this cyclical dating, the beginning of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. This year it falls on February 12th. A complete cycle takes 60 years and is made up of five cycles of 12 years each.
The Chinese Lunar Calendar names each of the twelve years after an animal. Legend has it that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from earth. Only twelve came to bid him farewell and as a reward he named a year after each one in the order they arrived. The Chinese believe the animal ruling the year in which a person is born has a profound influence on personality, saying: "This is the animal that hides in your heart."
For predictions about how the Year of the Rooster may affect you personally, go here after you have determined your animal year. Two different analyses are provided:
http://www.dragon-gate.com/resources/fengshuitools/chineseAstrology/index.asp
http://www.wofs.com/fsw.php?load=arcview&article=625&c=miscellaneous
*Your Gua (Kua) Number*
To make things even more personally relevant, you will need to know your Gua (or Kua) number, which will then reveal which directions tend to have positive influences on you and which ones are potentially harmful for you.
To calculate your Gua (or Kua) number, go here:
http://www.dragon-gate.com/resources/fengshuitools/KuaCalculator/index.asp
For a practical example of how this information can be used, go here: http://www.dragon-gate.com/resources/fengshuitools/windandJade/index.asp and read the first question and its answer.
*Your Combined Chinese and Western Astrological Sign*
You can look at how the combination of your Chinese and Western astrological signs affect your character and personality (for example, I am a Scorpio Rabbit). For a cursory introduction to this astrological approach using web-based resources, go to these sites:

Date: 2005-02-09 06:01 pm (UTC)The date of the New Year might change what sign you are. I was born 1/24/1971. The usual association for 1971 is the boar but the ney year in 1971 fell on January 26th. It turns out I'm actually the dog.
There are also elemental associations for the full 60-year cycle. The elements used in traditional chinese astrology are metal, water, wood, fire, and earth.
If you check out: http://www.tuvy.com/entertainment/chinese_horoscope.htm they list the years with the associated elements. If you click on the specific year you will be taken to a page that lists the exact dates for that year.
Thank you for posting all of these links! I plan to explore them in a lot more depth as soon as possible!

Date: 2005-02-09 06:18 pm (UTC)I'm a SAGITTARIUS RAT: Open and sometimes outspoken, the Sagittarius rats know what they want and stop at nothing to get it! They are peppy and full of energy and usually keep their more sad and depressed feelings bottled up inside. Full of determination, they never give up.
This really does seem to discribe me.

Date: 2005-02-10 09:17 pm (UTC)"LEO MONKEY: Direct, candid, and witty, we are often charmed by this personality which excels at story telling. Ignore this personality at your own potential peril!"
I think this is an excellent description: you are very, very direct, you are often witty and further, you use your wit in both fun *and* dangerous ways; you are quite charming when you want to be, often end up in a spotlight and you are pretty much impossible to ignore.
"LEONINE MONKEY
These Monkeys need to be liked and supported. They thrive from attention and love to be head turners. Generally, these Monkeys are wonderful at showing off their talents and their beauty."
If you are not a head turner, then I don't know who is. You draw attention when you enter a room, often employ your droll, dry wit to keep it, you are marvelously creative and talented and very much a show stopper when you want to be. As for needing to be liked and supported---that I don't know yet. I expect I'll find out. But you do have a tight support group that appears to be quite important to you.
Just my thoughts.

Date: 2005-02-09 07:52 pm (UTC)With such the overabundance of fire in pretty much *all* astrologies for me (Western has 5 planets and my ascendant in fire as well), most would never guess I'm such a shy, quiet, introverted person. :-p
