Woke up to an email from a medical student I don't know with the subject line "You're an inspiration". Is this some clever form of spam? I thought. What are they selling? Weird. Scanning it I realized that UMDNJ magazine came out with a feature on my book that I was interviewed for last year but totally forgot about. I'll look for it when I get into the office today. Maybe this will help me think about how to write my TED talk for the March application deadline.

Huh.

****

Also in my email, from Early Morning Buddhist Inspiration:

"Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill."

  ~The Buddha

Isn't it cool when the universe dovetails like that? I guess Siddharta was right: choose your words carefully. People really do listen to them, and are influenced thereby for the better or worse.

(And now I am wondering, exactly what did I say?)

Im always impressed by people in school or early in a process who reach out to others more advanced to try and work towards what they want. That takes foresight, courage and the willingness to strike out. I like those qualities. Don't know if I can help this woman, but I'll try just because she had the courage to write me.

Wow! I know you to be inspirational to a lot of the people you touch, but to inspire people you've never met is pretty amazing and powerful!

Yes! And in my haste and arrogance i often let the wrong words past my lips. Are these words true, loving, beneficial, necessary -- they should pass all four tests.

Good criteria to remember---may I remember them all when it really counts!

Keith, I say stupid things all the time. I just try not to do it too often in public.

You've been around for some real gems, though. : )

Yes, but your hind-brain knows when you're on stage. You get extra mojo then. :-)

"I believe that it does mean that a human being's agency — an individual's ability to make real, empowering choices for him or herself is very difficult to strip away completely. That gives me hope for every one of us."

See? Brilliant. :-)

Michael read the interview aloud last night, and when he got to this point, he stopped and gave a faux little melodramatic sniffle.

[He really had his compassionate communication hat on last night.]

As I broke out in astonished laughter, he hastily said he was sorry.

"No, you're not!" I exclaimed.

"No, I'm really not," he snickered, collapsing into raucous laughter.

My home: epicenter of gentle, compassionate and wise communication. 'Course, it actually is...

You are an inspiration honey. And I know how rare and special that "Fan Mail", as Dr. Ken calls it, is. You deserve it.
