I suppose that there is a "given" in that statement that the "those" referred to aren't in a war zone. ;-)

No, I am not.

A quick look at his Wikipedia entry makes me think he was an exceptional person, and one well worth taking inspiration from...

But I think there is a difference between "not falling into despair" and "finding peace". Then again, I'm not in the least a Buddhist.

My thoughts on this are not fully formed.

Some of it comes from understanding <> acceptance... you can understand a bad situation, even see value in the experience, w/o accepting it or giving in to it. The concept of "the last inch" in "V for Vendetta" is what I'm getting at here.
