Creating what you fear
Oct. 22nd, 2011 08:52 amIs this always true, 100% of the time? No, I don't think so.
But is it often true? Yes.
"...You do not need to control the behavior of others in order for you to thrive. Your attention to things that you think they do that keeps you from your thriving is, in fact, what keeps you from your thriving... It is not what they do to you; it's what you do to you in fear of what you think that they will do to you."

that's stoic
Date: 2011-10-22 04:20 pm (UTC)I admire much of the "you create your own reality" philosophy. But i am also middle class and have lived a very fortunate life in which others created a reality for me which was relatively safe and far from unpleasant (with a few notable exceptions.)
It pleases me to imagine that Epictetus was a slave, and thus presumably able to really put the stoic philosophy to the test. All i can say is that this philosophy works for me. I dare not say it will work for anybody else.
