We did something similar last week. Drove to the grocery story with our $10 off your order coupon in hand. Bought a bunch of stuff that was on sale. Patted ourselves n the back for saving 35% off our total order.
A day later we realized that the bag with the strawberries and the grapes and a few other items never made it home with us. There goes our $10 off.
Was taking minutes at charity AGM. Didn't check pen. Pen ran out 1/3 way through guest speaker's presentation. Luckily, someone else had a working pen to hand.
I prefer to think that it's the kindness of other people that makes these somewhat trying episodes into parables about how a single, simple act can avert disaster and prevent a difficult situation becoming a total washout.
