Recession hits Central Jersey's dearly departed
CENTRAL JERSEY — The recession's stranglehold has spilled over into after-life planning, with Central New Jersey's funeral homes beginning to feel the pressures of a slumping economy.
Local funeral directors say they are encountering more penny-wise consumers and an industry trying to accommodate their conservative spending habits.
"People are being better consumers, and we're getting a lot more price-shoppers these days," said Peter Kulbacki, owner of Brunswick Memorial Funeral Home in East Brunswick.
Death is coming at a much higher cost these days, too, according to the National Funeral Directors Association. Nationally, it estimated the average funeral in 1960 cost $708, but said today's median funeral rates range from $6,560 to $8,000.
