EDIT: As sleuthed out out by the_smith_e and pyrategrrl, this image may have come from here: http://robertvaladez.com/artwork/1137759_Rosita.html

Yes, it's this artist, Robert Valadez. Story is here: http://thinkmexican.org/post/378939781/rosita-adelita and here http://tamalechica.blogspot.com/2009/08/rosita-mexicana-style-by-robert-valadez.html

Thank you, mage_imbroglio and showingup!

Mexican revolution or Spanish Civil War?

Motto is newer than that, supposedly: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%AD_se_puede

However, it is hardly a special statement. The imagery reminds me of what I mentioned. Ah, I think I know who would know. Give me a bit.

No idea what it means though.

'Rosita' is clearly a play on 'Rosie the Riveter', and the motto of 'We can do it!'

So I just googled for the artist and rosita and found this article about the piece: http://tamalechica.blogspot.com/2009/08/rosita-mexicana-style-by-robert-valadez.html

A second friend commented:

I've never seen it before. However, I would say it is from some conflict other than the Spanish Civil War. The Mexican Civil War seems very likely.

a) The rifle is a lever action rifle, probably a Henry. That's a very distinctive weapon of the American West. I'm not aware of any major lever-action rifle used in the SCW. The Moisin-Nagant and the Model 93 are both bolt-action rfiles, and I can't think of any other really iconic rifles.

b) The woman's hair-clip looks Amerindian.

c) The woman's features seem vaguely Mestizo to me, moreso than say Catalan.

I've seen some art from that war by Angel Martin that was very similar in style, so he might be a good start as the artist...if not a search might turn up similar artists.

You intrigued me. I am a military and political geek, amongst other things. My friend Gordon has taught me a bit about Mexican conflicts and the Spanish Civil War.

I wanted to let you know how much I love this painting. I really appreciate you posting it and I have made it my wallpaper on my laptop. She's there for me every time I open my computer and I feel her possibility and power.

I'd love to spend a little time on the phone chatting with you sometime next week. I'm done w/finals on Tuesday, but work Tues night and have a kid event Wed night. Lemme know when you are available.
