What's up?

I still have no real clue what's about to unfold, but I'm much more OK with this than I was a week or a month ago. Trying to imagine two and a half weeks in Oz mostly by myself is perplexing. Who will I turn out to be after I get there? Once I get back?

Mostly packed. Mostly prepared.

Over here, it feels like this: ??????????????????????????????????????????????

Trying to remember the lessons I learned as an archaeologist (please feel free to add any useful things you've learned about traveling alone, traveling in the desert, or anything else---yes, I am asking for advice):

* Don't put any part of your body someplace you can't see (I failed to do this twice and was stung by a scorpion twice).

* Listen, watch, learn, keep your mouth shut, especially at first.

* Don't sit on the rainforest floor.

* Expect to get bitten. Try not to get bitten by anything life-threatening (see rule #1).

* Shake out your boots/shoes before putting them on.

* Sunscreen, water, hat, bandanna. Sunscreen, water, hat, bandanna.

*Tuck your pants into your boots and use insect repellant.

* Readings can be traded for many useful things: always carry Tarot cards.

* Try not to make snap judgements. Try not to make snap judgements.

You are an explorer in love and in life, and you've discovered so many wonderful things along the way. Why should this trip be any different? You will have a wonderful time.

You will be fine. A smile goes a long way. Make sure you know how you will be getting back before hiking down to the forest floor. I did not do this and ended up having to climb a friggin mountain to get back up.

really practical stuff? Copy your passport and leave a copy with someone who can fax it to you if needed. If everything is rain, muddied, flooded burned or lost, you can still get home.
Don't try to pet the kangaroos. I hear they punch back ;)
Don't pet the spiders, they are poisonous
Drink the clean water.
HAVE A GREAT TIME!

Are there rainforests in Australia?

Whether there are or not, I'm sure you'll have an amazing time.

Say hello to Amanda Palmer if you see her.

Be Present.
This will bring you awareness of your surroundings without undue worry, will connect you with the right people and bring you gratitude for this blessing and golden opportunity.

-- Accept what you are offered.

-- If there are toilets and places to sit, use them.

-- Slow down or rest in midday when it's hot.

-- Shade is good.

Have a wonderful trip. Throw another shrimp on the barbie, and no worries, mate! ;-)

1 - Wear your wedding ring when out and about.
2 - Don't tell any stranger that you are travelling alone.
3 - If an escape is needed, use, "Gotta run. My husband is expecting me back at the hotel in 1/2 hour."
4 - Oz is full of wonderous things that aren't available here. If you love something and must have it - buy it. You'll regret it if you don't.
5 - Be careful of gem merchants.
6 - Triplet opals are not a bargain. They are worth just about nothing.
7 - Australians are the best people on earth.
8 - Be careful of the sun. Hats are good.
9 - Climb the Sydney Harbor Bridge.
10 - Look around at dusk. There might be bats. They are so cool to see.

What's strange: I never would have thought of 2 and 3, but they sound like good strategies.

Bats are lovely. I will look for them.

Heya! Have a wonderful time if I don't get to respond again before you go. I'm not sure where exactly my friend is living or if I'll hear from him before you leave. No guarantees of course. :)
