Wow! What luck!

I just dropped off my 3 new chapters at Peter's Institute office (he said he was impressed that i got them done and also said that I should get some version of the conclusion to him this week...gonna write the bulk of it today, though).

While I was walking back to the car, I saw an *entire* long bed of multicolored marigolds innocently sitting in front of the Dean of Arts and Sciences Faculty office. A whole bed of them. Shortly to be sacrificed to the cold.

Unloved and doubtless in need of appreciation.

They are exactly perfect for my Day of the Dead altar---OK, not the pure orange Mexican marigolds, but really, quite close enough.

Hmmmmm.

Do I lose merit if I go and dig some up on November 1?

What if I leave some dough in the hole? With a note? Or maybe chocolate?

So what do you think: what should I leave in that hole? Cause you know, I am gonna go and dig some up.

If they're unwanted and unloved and about to die, maybe saving them and potting them at home for your altar is not such a bad thing. I'd leave blood, because plants love the nitrates in it - especially menstrual blood.

Not chocolate, because the little critters that end up eating the chocolate may get sick from the chocolate.

Maybe some fertilizer for the winter months?

I usually do hair, and some water where appropriate. I like the sugar skull idea, though. And the pennies. Perhaps a little of everything, if you're feeling indecisive? :-)

I've done the native american thing too long, I'd suggest tobacco. :-) But definitely go for it! They're only going to die, and this way they will be appreciated before the frost gets to them!
