I forgot to say that Pema says that this practice is an important tool for making friends with yourself. She explains it as part of what it takes to learn to be present with all your thoughts and feelings without rejecting them.

In this practice, the person you are actually compassionately abiding with is yourself.

And through learning to be kind and understanding with the parts of yourself that make you most uncomfortable, you are able to begin feeling real compassion for others, because you begin to see that they are just like you: struggling in the just the same way as you are, with many of the same demons.

Makes sense. I find that the comfier I am with myself, the easier I am with others, and the more appreciative I am of them.

I also find that the more I attempt to understand others, the easier I am on myself.
