(Nearly) free composters for NJ gardeners
May. 29th, 2008 08:50 amHey, did you know that the Garden State lets you acquire home composters for a fraction of their retail cost?
I bought 2 very large home composters for $40. Seriously. And the county dropped them off in my front yard and told me to write them a check and send it sometime *after* they were delivered. Sheesh!
If you live in Middlesex County, NJ, you can get especially fancy models for dirt cheap (hee hee). Check out the link below for details (this is a 2007 poster, but I called them, and they are still running the same program, along with composting workshops, this spring and summer; when I called a few weeks ago I had just missed a composting event). Plus, these folks will sell you a low-cost composter even if you don't live in Middlesex County because they hate to turn people away---the gentleman I spoke to told me that if my county couldn't help me, he/they could:

Check out all the cool models available!
If you live in Union County it's harder to track down the right office because the composting program for Union County is not on the web. There is also only one basic model available, but it's only $20 and they deliver.
If you live in Union County, you can call the very nice Stephanie at the Union County Bureau of Environmental Services in Westfield, NJ at 908-654-9890 and ask her for help.
If you live in another NJ county, you can try calling your county office of recycling or sanitation. Or just call the gentleman at the Middlesex County office. He won't turn you away. :)
Live in another state? Don't buy a composter at full price unless you check out your local recycling and sanitation offices first!
