Well, the organism that caused it was bactrum resistant, which is why I am still sick. This morning I actually thought hard about not going back to try and find out why I was still in pain, and just counting on the antibiotic to really kick in over the weekend. Human stupidity is deeply ingrained and hard to resist. Fortunately, the stupid slid off of me and I dragged myself in. A very nice resident at my family practice broke the news about the drug resistance and told me that I probably also had cystitis---an inflamed bladder---and that the infection was happily settling in there, too.

Fortunately, the Cipro he wrote for me seems to be helping. I won't really know until later this weekend. I had some plans to visit Geo on Saturday and get some errands done, but they has been replaced with resting, sleeping, drinking large, large quantities of water and Crystal Light and perhaps, field noting very close to a bathroom.

Hopefully, the Cipro will do the job and I will be in better shape by Sunday afternoon, or Monday morning at the least.

Ah, yes---Cipro is my antibiotic of choice! I am currently taking it for the UTI that I thought I had before the kidney stones. It does help and quickly---if the resident was really on the ball, he will have done a urine culture and sensitivity to see exactly what nasty little bug has taken up residence, and then they can give you the best antibiotic for getting rid of it.

Try to stay away from the caffeine while you're recuperating, and take the Cipro before or a couple of hours after you'd taken any other medication. SOme prescriptions block the effort of antibiotics and will cause you to be on them for a longer period of time while the bugs just get more resistant.

Gentle hugs---I know how much this hurts!

Problem with giving you the best antibiotic after the culture results come is is that it gives the critters a head start -- those sensitiviy results take a day or two to come back from the lab. So most docs give an antibiotic that works most of the time right away, which helps most people -- and then change the prescription if needed.

Yep--that's what I meant! :)

Sometimes it takes two or three courses of antibiotics to clear away my UTI's---I work very hard NOT to get them in the first place. I can go for months with nary a sign and then---boom---there it is. And I'll be weeks and weeks clearing it out of my system.

I've had great difficulty with my renal system since I was 8 years old and had to have surgery on the urethra---it was closing, causing urine to stagnate, back up into the kidneys and cause infections. I was hoispitalized three times in 18 months with infections---one was so severe that I had to take an experimental drug which cost $1 per capsule (that was back in the mid-60's!) As far as I can remember, it didn't do much for me. I also had monthly catheterizations by a urologist or about 6 months, then every two months for about a year, then every three months for another year. Not with Foleys, either---the long glass tubes. Talk about HURT!

Um, is crystal light OK to drink under the circumstances? It's pure chemicals, isn't it?

Rest, drink, sleep, pee, get better. And don't eat grapefruit or pomegranite.

Can someone pick you up some uva ursi? Not pleasant tasting, but it does help.

Cipro for a UTI, isn't that a little like using a cannon to kill a mosquito?

What about homeopathic remedies? And constant intake of uva ursi! And, while I hate to be the one to say it, don't forget to pee after you have sex! And watch the friction down there! I have had times in my life that certain positions were almost certain to result in a UTI. That might be TMI but it is something that once I ID'd the problem, really reduced the number of UTIs I had!

Crystal Light seems good for the lack of sugar to feed the bacteria but ugh, the artificial colors, flavors & preservatives it must contain!
