As someone who quit smoking some 10 years and 70 pounds ago, I have to agree -- even though being fat has its own health risks.

I've already lost two good friends to lung cancer. Three is NOT a charm.

I got scared in the fifth grade, when they brought in color pictures to show us what the inside of a smoker's lung looked like. Tried one puff of a cigarette many, many years ago to please a boyfriend---almost choked to death. Lost the boyfriend---gained a sense of self, and realized that I could never smoke cigarettes OR anything else. Never have since---never will.

I've worked with too many cancer patients---young adults, small children, elderly people. It's not pretty, it's not wonderful, it's not glamorous and it kills. That's enough reason for me to encourage folks to stop smoking, and to insist that friends dont' start. I wish I could convince my children that the are killing themselves---I have two that do smoke, two that don't.

Hugs for you. It's hard to be around folks who are suffering with the plague of the modern age. Damn near impossible, in fact.

Today is day 18 Smoke Free for both me and Billy. Our tempers are even starting to calm down significantly.
