This brief lifetime

How are we going to spend this brief lifetime? Are we going to strengthen our well-perfected ability to struggle against uncertainty, or are we going to train in letting go? Are we going to hold on stubbornly to “I’m like this and you’re like that”? or are we going to move beyond that narrow mind? Could we start to train as a warrior, aspiring to connect with the natural flexibility of our being and to help others to do the same? If we start to move in this direction, limitless possibilities will open up.

Pema Chodron

You have been oriented that you must pay a price in order to get somewhere, and in the process, you've come to believe that getting there must be really important, therefore, it must be your purpose. And we say, but if you're not getting to joy, then you've gotten nowhere. Joy is really where you're going.

So it's not even 5 am and I am lying in bed worrying. This is just stupid. I can lie here and worry, or I can get up and go to the gym, which is my form of Prozac. This is not a difficult decision, but I'm not wanting to get out of my warm bed. That's it---getting up!

This Sunday, Dusty the Hair Fairy is showing up at my place to do hair cuts and color. I met Dusty at the Dirt Road when I noticed a tremendously cute pixie-ish woman with glorious Isis wings tattooed across her upper chest. The wings were bridged by a pair of long, slim scissors. "Now what could that mean?" I wondered.

This tattoo is a symbol of Dusty's work in the world: she coaxes inner beauty into the physical through the medium of haircuts, makeovers and color.

Dusty is coming to my place this Sunday and will be here all day, working her magic. She is careful to price her work very reasonably (dry cut $35; shampoo and blowout $45; no extra charge for long hair). If you want to check out photos of her work, she's "The Hair Fairy" on Facebook. Take a look.

If you want me to save you a spot, please let me know. We have about four left.

If you'd like her phone number so you can talk to her yourself, please also let me know here, via cell phone or by email. Dusty is very responsive to comments and messages left via her Facebook page, so you can also chat with her that way. Even if you can't come this Sunday, I encourage you to check her out. She's very good.

Gods and Goddesses in the Garden: Greco-Roman Mythology and the Scientific Names of Plants
Peter Bernhardt

"Bernhardt reconnects us to the myths behind the botany without belaboring either Greek mythology or plant nomenclature rules. There's something for everyone, from brief summaries of major myths to obscure facts or little-known alternate versions, from famous heroes to near-forgotten nymphs." —American Gardener
