Rob B's 'Scorpio' for this week
Sep. 14th, 2005 01:15 pmSCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Sometime in the coming weeks you could
begin a project that will take at least 12 years to complete. Will it be
worth spending that much time? I believe it will, though you might not
think so now. In fact, you may not even be inclined to launch the project
if you imagine it can't be completed by 2008. From what I can tell,
though, the purpose of the long adventure is bigger than you're able to
foresee, and the ways it will change you are important in ways you cannot
yet understand.
My thoughts: so what else is new? (Said with a smile and a chuckle) Name a significant project that I've undertaken that could be thought of as 'short term'---and good luck to you!
Marriage--15+ years, ended only whe all efforts to nurture health failed
Dissertation---16 years, ended only when I dragged myself to the delivery of the final copy this January
Dissertation Book---who knows. Years.
Blue Star Initiate and teacher---lifetime commitment. Maybe a multi-lifetime commitment.
Braided Stream---8 (?) years active, lifetime in membership
Raising and living with my dear, dysfunctional cats---15+ years and ongoing
Teaching and mentoring others in all ways in which I have something to offer---lifetime commitment
Personal growth and the continual trek to Full Adulthood---lifetime commitment
Close friendships---lifetime commitment
Bodybuilding and fitness---21 years and ongoing, planning a lifetime commitment, even if disabled
What I have learned: I don't do short term commitments. It's long term or nothing.
This would explain why my perfectly sensible plan to date several nice people slowly over the next few years, fending off commitment in a distinctly low-key but caring way, appears to have never even gotten off the ground.

Date: 2005-09-14 06:31 pm (UTC)With the exception of trying to better get to know myself, I think the kid is the only commitment I've had that's lasted over 10 years. And I think that until recently I've done a pretty shitty job of the trying to get to know myself project.
Wow, that leaves me with only one long term commitment. The kid. I think I'm depressed now.

Date: 2005-09-14 06:52 pm (UTC)I could say the same thing----but if I add up all my marriages, I can say that I have a long-term committment to being committed to a mate. I have a lifetime comittment to learning and growing---no matter what I undertake. I have a lifetime committment to my family---ALL of them. I have a lifetime committment to caring for other people, no matter who they are or where they're going.
I think if you look around, you'll see where your long-term stuff is lurking. You just don't realize it because you're so used to carrying it with you!
Hugs!
