...with creative therapies like therapeutic riding (with horses), music therapy, yoga and integrated movement therapy as well as ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis). This slide show explores a range of awesome, non-traditional therapeutic approaches with exceptional results! It also supports the notion that involving the whole mind/body/spirit continuum in any healing effort will produce exponentially better results than just targeting one of these three areas.

There are also tests that a pediatrician can perform in the first few months that can identify ASD's. This allows parents to adapt the way they teach their children from early on, which can make dealing with the disorder(s) much easier when they hit school age.

Asperger's Syndrome is especially close to home for me. My nephew (now 5) was diagnosed with Asperger's a few years ago. His preschool teacher noticed he didn't interact with the other children in class. However, he was extremely bright, excellent at problem solving, and physically coordinated in odd ways. (e.g. He could hit a golf ball with correct stance and swing by age 3, but didn't learn to jump until about the same time.) He could read, but he didn't like to talk.

He's improved a lot. Having a chatterbox and "princess" for a little sister has helped.

Anyway, it's something on my radar. One of a few things.

Did you happen to post this because of stuff in my journal I've been putting up for the last few days, or is this another one of those eerie coincidences?

Ummm, no, it's an eerie coincidence. I saw this on the MSN home page and was drawn to it because a dear friend of mine has a child with Asperger's Syndrome. At least as far as my conscious mind goes, it's an eerie coincidence.

I figured as much. My head isn't quite that big yet... But just thought I'd check. Signs and Omens and all that, you know ;-)

dear friends of mine have a son who was finally diagnosed with Asperger's a couple of years ago. He's been in karate for about a year and a half. It's done wonders for him (the structure, discipline and rules help him a great deal).

My son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at age 3. Some of the techniques presented in the MSN article have been especially effective, such as TEACCH(sp?) and ABA. Still, given the nature of AS, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. It's great to see this issue getting some coverage in the mainstream media.
