On December 1, I did a talk at LeHigh Valley that enabled me to listen to some other really, really good talks.

The one that impressed me the most was a talk on the impact of early trauma on behavior.

I didn't know that much about trauma, or about how trauma is often misdiagnosed, so this talk really opened my mind and heart about it.

I just got the DVD that has the talk on it this week and I want to put a copy on a private web page that can be accessed only by people who read my journal.

I don't want to put it up for everyone without permission, but I think that few enough people actually read my blog that this link will only go to people I really care about.

I'm going ask Michael to help me put this up and if he can, I'll post the link here in my blog later this week.

I only ask that you don't distribute the link. This will just be for people who come here and have an interest.

I will try my best.  I just want to make sure I don't violate copyright laws; this will be just for people to whose well-being I have a personal commitment.

I understand. I'd never ask you to do that...

So, why don't you ask for permission?

I don't know specific numbers, but trauma is most definitely under-diagnosed and treated. I've come to believe that anyone who expresses a combination of anxiety and depression to me is probably more likely to have a trauma background than separate anxiety and depression issues. Unfortunately, the client needs to provide a trauma history for an 'official' diagnosis of a traumatic disorder. Also note that the current definition of "trauma" according to the DSM is kind of lousy and doesn't account for many things that you and I would consider traumatic.

Given that, consider how many people are walking around with trauma histories who never show up in a therapist's office and don't consider themselves traumatized.
