It's both a good thing and a little weird to have a brother who is completely obsessed with the weather. He tracks everything for each geographic area around our homes. I hardly ever know what's happening; he always does.

Growing up in Oklahoma shaped his thinking a great deal. Every summer we would be whisked away to the shelter a couple of times a month [or week], until later, when we bought a house and began migrating to our own storm shelter. It was pretty scary, and while I coped by refusing to think about it, he coped by learning everything he could and becoming a weather expert.

I think I've disappointed my dad by refusing to stay aware of the natural world around me. The man who can stand in a field of wheat and tell when it's ripe by the sound of the wind through the grain has given the world a daughter who never even watches the weather. At least he can feel good about my brother, who has dutifully called and reminded me to turn the refrigerators to their highest settings, fill the tub with water so we can flush and fully charge all phones and computers.

Off to be responsible.

We're supposed to be Witches, in touch with the natural world! We should be able to tell the weather by the tingle of the warts on our noses!

Seriously, one of the goals of my personal craft education has been to try to be more aware of the natural world. I feel that it's all the more important since I spend all day surrounded by plastic boxes that toss electrons back and forth.

That's part of the reason that when I started carving my own rune sets, I carved some of them out of 25 different branches from 25 different trees. It forced me to learn how to tell one kind of tree from another.

I'd be happy if most witches knew what the MOON is doing. Y'know, without the lunar calendar app. Try looking UP occasionally, people. It's a great big sky, and pretty stuff happens there. :-)

There are various ways of appreciating nature. The scientist's is one, the farmer's is another, the poet's still another. I had a child's appreciation of nature as something to run and climb and play in. Now i am trying to develop a poet's appreciation. I want it to show me truth, and tell me about my soul. A breeze creates one kind of dance, a hurricane, another. I love to watch trees dance.
