These updates are more for me than for you. Most of the time I have to write in order to process, so I'll just keep posting my travel thoughts so I can come to peace with them. I don't actually expect you to read them.
Today I spent the afternoon and evening wandering all around central Sidney. Since I was given a multipass and told to go take the ferries (as they're the most expensive), I went and took two ferries.
Looking over the harbor was stunning in every way. One ferry gave me a great view of the opera house from the middle of the bay and the other zoomed up close as we glided by.
I saw crews of people watching us from the top of the Sidney bridge. I saw the beauty of the water, gloried in the cityscape all around me and enjoyed the gorgeous homes that peppered the hills around each ferry stop.
Afterwards, I wandered over to explore the Opera and check out the botanical gardens.
There are bats in some of the trees there: huge, furry reddish bats with faces like foxes and broad leathery wings. They're gorgeous, plentiful and VERY, VERY LOUD.
I met a whole crew of cockatiels?---I think that's what they're called---and they mobbed me in search of food. One of them chased down another tourist and began eating his leg, then moved on to me. We had a short tug of war over who owned my pants. It was really amusing, and perfectly timed: I had just started feeling a little lonely and sad.
It's gorgeous to be here and I love exploring everything: it just feels weird to do it alone. I really, really missed the people I love. Things this good should be shared. Sigh.
Tomorrow, D. is meeting me at 10:30 and we'll wander off together for the day. I found the museum with the terracotta warriors and we'll go and see them in the evening.
I haven't seen her in years. That will be fun.

Date: 2011-02-25 12:09 pm (UTC)Still, it's fun to vicariously live your adventure. I love the birds that come and roost all over you---in the Carribean they were larrikeets, very colorful and loud little things, but really fun to play with.
Many of us are with you in spirit, if not in person, so you're never quite alone.
Love you!

Date: 2011-02-25 01:15 pm (UTC)When I was there I spent a whole day just walking around the streets of Sydney. Its a cute little city -- probably much larger now than when I was there which was 30 years ago.
