Office in, squat rack out
Aug. 23rd, 2009 08:30 amIt's been so long since I've had room for a home office that I can hardly believe it.
Last week we went to pick up an iPhone case for Michael and walked through Crate and Barrel. I used to love many of the things there, but it's crazy stupid expensive, so it was strictly a window shopping experience. Found a gorgeous black desk that pulls out to twice its size and has a streamlined modern feel.
I love modern and modern-primitive, innovative style, and I love all things collapsible, foldable and shrinkable. they offer flexibility, which is important to me.
But it was $500. Yeah. Right. The days of building my identity through conspicuous consumption are gone, thank goodness. So I admired it for a moment and moved on after a brief comment to Michael.
A couple of days ago he found an ad that sounded just like it on Craig's List. He went it look, and it was a much nicer, upgraded version, originally more than $500. But it was $250. Still more than what I wanted to spend.
This is what we did: we bought it and I agreed to let Michael put my Olympic weights, weight holder, bar and squat rack on Craig's list. It was painful, but Michael pointed out that we do not have room for the squat rack, we have a gorgeous gym membership, and we are not moving for quite a few years. Plus, if I want the downstairs to function as a personal training and workshop space, I need to preserve the SPACE. So we will keep the stack, the standard weight set, the dumbbells, the elliptical, the WaterRower and the bench, and sell the rest of the gym equipment to pay for my desk and used file cabinets.
It makes sense, and it's a reasonable trade.
And I love, love, love my new home office.
Does anyone local have an office chair they want to get rid of?

Date: 2009-08-23 01:57 pm (UTC)Good luck with the chair. It strikes me as strange that I was having a discussion on office chairs and why my boyfriend's legs hurt occasionally. He's rather tall and I think the chair is not proportional to him. Make sure whatever chair you get is supporting your knees.
FYI, I did see some very nice chairs at Office Depot for $100, I'm not sure how long the sale is on for though. I've got a coupon for $10 anything over $40, but it doesn't go into affect till September, probably when the sale is off.

Office chairs should be easy to find at used office supply stores. I can think of at least one on Rt. 22. It would be good to go there and both try it out before buying.
