1. Choose a song with lyrics that reflect some deep belief that you hold about the way you want to live your life, or a truth that shapes who you are in some critical way.

2. Post them in your journal. Explain, in a few sentences, what that song says to you.

3. Star, bracket or highlight those particular verses that speak the greatest truth to you.

4. If you like, choose two songs.

My answers:

Why I love it: It says take the risk, drop your pride, and learn to be strong enough to cope well with either good or bad outcomes. It says the risk of loss, shame and sorrow is worth it it.

Shower The People

*You can play the game and you can act out the part
Though you know it wasn’t written for you
But tell me, how can you stand there with your broken heart
Ashamed of playing the fool*

One thing can lead to another; it doesn’t take any sacrifice
Oh, father and mother, sister and brother
If it feels nice, don’t think twice

Just shower the people you love with love
Show them the way that you feel
Things are gonna work out fine if you only will
Shower the people you love with love
Show them the way you feel
Things are gonna be much better if you only will

*You can run but you cannot hide
This is widely known
And what you plan to do with your foolish pride
When you’re all by yourself alone*
*Once you tell somebody the way that you feel
You can feel it beginning to ease*
I think it’s true what they say about the squeaky wheel
Always getting the grease.

*Better to shower the people you love with love
Show them the way that you feel
Things are gonna be just fine if you only will*

Shower the people you love with love
Show them the way that you feel
Things are gonna be much better if you only will
Shower the people you love with love
Show them the way that you feel
You’ll feel better right away

*Don’t take much to do
Sell you pride
They say in every life
They say the rain must fall
Just like pouring rain
Make it rain
Make it rain*

Love, love, love is sunshine.
Oh yes
Make it rain
Love, love, love is sunshine
Yeah, all right

Everybody, everybody
Shower the people you love with love

Why I love it: It says have integrity, and recognize and respect the integrity of others.

Every Kinda People

Said the fight to make ends meet
Keeps a man upon his feet
*Holding down his job
Trying to show he can't be bought*

Ooh, it takes every kind of people
To make what life's about, yeah
Every kind of people
To make the world go 'round

Someone's looking for a lead
In his duty to a King or creed
*Protecting what he feels is right
Fights against wrong with his life*
**There's no profit in deceit
Honest men know that
Revenge do not taste sweet**

Whether yellow, black or white
Each and every man's the same inside
It takes every kind of people
To make what life's about, yeah
Every kind of people
To make the world go 'round

*You know that love's the only goal
That could bring a peace to any soul
Hey, and every man's the same
He wants the sunshine in his name*
Ooh, it takes every kind of people...

Music is such an integral part of my life, I cannot possibly choose just one song or lyric to express my beliefs or personal truths. Every piece of music is a divine inspiration and speaks to someone's heart. I can take something from every song that I hear.

Lately, there is one song by Josh Groban that really grabs me---mostly because of the way I have needed to lean on people in the past year, and because I want folks to be able to lean on me....

You Raise Me Up

*When I am down, an Oh, my soul so weary...
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.*

*You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.*

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

*There is no life – no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.*

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

Can you imagine being that for someone? Can you imagine facilitating the immense growth of a new spirit? It's awesome, wondrous. The best thing I have ever done in my life is raise four children to responsible, healthy, joyful adulthood----and just by raising them up to be more than they ever thought they could be.
