Essential Oils 1, Dry Socket 0
Feb. 1st, 2008 12:45 pmFriday's oral surgery went well and I was exercising again on Saturday. Since Monday, recovery has been more painful. I have been trying to be more careful since the weekend because all the reading materials (and all my dear ones who have experienced this surgery) have been warning me to avoid the dreaded "dry socket," an acutely painful condition in which no scabs form on the surgical sites and there is much badness.
The left lower tooth socket gave me trouble, but I was able to draw up an unfolding infection in its early stages and keep all the tooth sockets clean with a 1:2 mix of tea tree and clove bud essential oil. Between this and careful pain management (ibuprofen punctuated with the occasional 1/2 percoset) I've been able to work and manage my recovery.
Today I went for my follow up visit with the oral surgeon. Imagine my surprise when he looked in my mouth and announced incredulously, "Wow, you have dry socket. How have you kept it so clean? Those sockets are perfect! And most people find this really painful. What are you doing to manage it so well?"
I told him about my essential oil mix and he was very, very surprised. "Well, you're managing this perfectly. Keep doing what you're doing. In your case, I think this is an alternative road to healing. It will take a little longer with the dry socket, but you're doing great. Healing will be a little slower, but you're fine."
Eating is a pain and I'm doing less of it. Exercise keeps my spirits up. So far, I've lost 3 pounds.
I need more sleep because I get up once a night to pack the lower sockets with oil-infused gauze and take pain meds, but as long as I go to bed early and get up later, I'm OK.
Looks like I'm on the "Stay at home, rest, and eat less" plan for awhile.

Aphrodisia
Date: 2008-02-02 06:20 am (UTC)I want to start making some. I was also wondering if you knew if oils such as that would be okay to add to candles?
