My mom called last night to tell me that Michael's segment had been broadcast on the Today Show that morning, so she knew he'd made it into the special. She also told me it was being broadcast last night on CNBC as well as on the 15th.

So we turned it on and discovered several things:

1. There are several random shots of Michael and me in the audience nodding our heads. Boy, do I need to lose weight! Oh well, I'm using this to motivate myself.

2. They did broadcast part of his segment: the part where he smiled charmingly and responded affirmatively to Suze, not their more ambivalent exchanges. He's the cute guy with glasses in the orange shirt asking her a question about divorce/protecting his 401k from taxes in case he dies. It airs at about 45 minutes after the start of the program. Cool.

Looking chubby on TV does NOT mean you need to lose weight. Everyone who appears on TV regularly is a skeleton. They are all size 0. Not everyone is meant to be a size 0. At size 0 most people have a BMI that puts them in the "underweight" category, which is NOT considered to be healthy.

You are strong and healthy and beautiful just the way you are.

Go watch "Thin" and then try telling me you need to lose weight.

The women on "Thin" are terrifying. Watching that documentary made me feel very satisfied with my weight---for awhile. But I really want to look strong and muscular, and that is within my power to do. I also want to *be* strong---and I can do that too.

I'll tell you what I tell Brian. I will still love you even if you weigh 300 lbs.

I want to be strong too.

They say it adds a good 10lbs.

[livejournal.com profile] elphaba_of_oz is completely right. We are not used to seeing actually fit and women on television. We're used to seeing women who are so thin that we'd be concerned if we met them in the flesh, but because they dominate the tv, normal people look outsized in comparison. Look at a celebrity photo magazine cover from this year. Look at one from the 1950s.

I remember hearing an interview with a singer (I have a feeling it was Leanne Rimes)some years ago, where she said that after a televised awards ceremony, her record company told her she needed to lose X lbs because she was "too fat" in comparison with other singers. She pointed out that she was taller than many of the others, and that she was fit and healthy. They said it didn't matter, and that they'd arrange for a crash diet. She told them where to cram it. She said the only good indicator of whether you need to contemplate changing your body is when it is not feeling as healthy and strong as it should.

Elizabeth Taylor's "rule" was based on fact: people look far better (and thinner) when shot on film, not video (I'm not sure how digital video fits in there). In my experience, even incredibly attractive people look awful on video, unless their makeup is done *specifically* for video and they're stick thin. {{{hugs}}}

There's an article on how high-definition video is causing panic amongst tv presenters and actors, because it shows up every "flaw", and it shows up make-up, too.
