Flooding

Utterly exhausted.

As soon as I saw Cat's post this morning I knew we were in trouble too. Michael and Trents' belonging's---at least half of everything that they have---was in the basement at the new house. It had already let water in and partially flooded the very week they closed on the house.

Michael and I jumped in our cars as soon as I told him and sped to the new house; Richard was already there too. That's when we discovered that the water was coming in on Richard and Ildiko's side and that the $5000 waterproofing job that was done only days ago was failing.

All of the sump pumps were off because the electricity was off, but that's not what the problem was. The metal sheeting up the sides of the walls is too low. It was supposed to be 18 inches high; it's barely 1 inch high in some places.

We hauled one room's worth of stuff upstairs and rearranged the second room so that if/when it floods the loss is manageable. Then Michael had to go to work. I hauled up almost all of the last of Michael's stuff and somehow found places for it upstairs away from the possible flooding--- but we just don't have much room! It's really, really tight in there.

I feel good that I managed to haul almost everything by myself. Today I was truly useful. This had to be done and I was able to get it done; between the flooding that's expected tonight and the fact that Friday morning we fly to Florida there was no wiggle room at all.

Of course I am not packed, I'm not sure what I will wear on the weekend and I haven't picked up the diving referral letters yet.

Who cares! Only Kayla's dress matters this weekend, and I can pick up the diving letters tomorrow.

Before going to work Michael got the basement people on the phone and yelled at them, and they say they are coming tomorrow. How in the gods' names are they going to do *anything* about our basement in the middle of an in-progress flood?

I am exhausted.

POSTSCRIPT: Michael just called. The basement people showed up after all and are doing the additional work they need to do now. They are taking the sheeting up 3 feet. Richard is also working on the wiring and we may be able to get the electricity on today after all---that would mean the sump pumps will work tonight and tomorrow!

*HUGS* I hope there wasn't any damage!

Try and get a dehumidifier set up down there to quell any mold growth. Last thing you need is a moldy/mildewy basement!

I hope the flooding abates soon!

So sorry!

Riding around Raritan yesterday by the community college on my motorcycle showed me more flooded roads than I thought imaginable, it also made me sigh in relief that we aren't living in the lowlands of Flemington anymore and up in the Watchung Mountains now, it's moist, but the water flows downhill.

It looks like Wilkes-Barre might get saved by the dikes, but barely. The Delaware river might crest today. Looks iffy.

Stay dry and safe!

I've been thinking of you as I've read the news down here. So many rivers and towns that I know (many thanks to you!) have been in the news, it's scary.

My sister leaves for D.C. Saturday and she's worried about her trip there, too.

I hope that everything turns out alright and that the house, the belongings, et. al recover just fine, and that this doesn't you and your loved ones too much stress.

In the meantime, have a great diving trip - I can't wait to read all about it!

Love,

Stephanie
