A good choice for Night 1 of freedom
Aug. 19th, 2004 10:08 pmKaren and I went to the Princeton Shambhala Meditation group tonight. It was a good choice. We met Ani Trime, an American-born Buddhist nun who gave us a meditation lesson. I tried my first attempt at relaxing into meditation. It was...the beginning of something. It felt like something I could teach myself with persistent practice. I am encouraged by this. So far, I've learned that practices of all kinds generally require persistence---a refusal to give up---more than anything else. So far, I've done a fair amount of persisting, and thus, I think this particular kind of persistence may also be within my reach.
We will return on Sunday.
We also watched a video of Pema Chodron's teachings. It was gripping, powerful and funny. I was glued to the TV. I also noticed the large area of overlap between Buddhist teachings about the mind and the teachings and theories of David Schwartz and Ruth Morehouse ( two American cuttng-edge marriage and sex therapists). Both seemingly disparate sets of knowledge say very much the same things about human growth and human potential, and lead curious, thirsty learners to the very same well, using different language.
Both also have a great deal to offer teachers of Craft.
I will continue with this class and these videos. They have something valuable to teach me that I think I may be able to translate into my own teachings---with luck.

Reading Suggestion
Date: 2004-08-20 10:59 am (UTC)So glad to hear you are starting to relax and take some much needed time to yourself!
I mentioned Ken Wilber to you before - if you are interested in reading some of the most incredible blend of East-West philosophies and what is ahead - this guy is a must-read! An easy intro into his work is his biographical work regarding his wife's ordeal with cancer, 'Grace and Grit' or just look him up on Amazon and check out all the listings.
All my love!
