Trent's punishment for creating a clandestine Facebook account (handed down by Michael):

...to write a one-page essay on why it was a terrible idea and recopy it 10 times in a single sitting.

Trent wrote his essay tonight. When I read it, I laughed so hard I almost passed it. Seriously. Then I thought, "Hey, this shows promise."

So I asked it I could post it, and Trent gave me permission to do so. Here it is, untouched and unedited, for your amusement and edification.

"I have realized my wrongs in my recent heist with a Facebook account."

I understand that you didn't like the fact that I (to use your words), went behind your back. I also understand that you didn't like the fact that I had to lie to get an account. I know that you don't want me to be excessively honest, but you would still like me to be slightly honest with you (OK, maybe more than slightly).

Another thing I had realized that you didn't like was that I hadn't thought it through. If I had thought it through, then I wouldn't have made as many mistakes. I might not have even made any (unlikely though). One of my main mistakes was that I didn't use a false name, therefore anybody I friended could tell you, or worse, Anya, Another thing I did wrong was that I friended your direct family. That is almost as bad as friending you directly because nothing can be hidden on Facebook.

Last but not least I understand that it is a safety rule that I shouldn't get a Facebook account yet. For example, somebody could lie about who they are and then arrange to meet me and kidnap or harass me in many ways. They could even kill me!

These were the many rules that were broken, the way I should have done it, and why it was unsafe. I understand better after writing this as to why you didn't want me to get a Facebook account yet and how I did wrong. In conclusion, I apologize for not being honest with you, I apologize for completely disregarding all safety rules.

Well, his teenage years will definitely be interesting. Oh and get that lad into the Model United Nations or at least a debate club. :) Priceless reasoning. Love it!

I can think of some other reasons for not using Facebook. But I suppose his school hasn't taught Trent how to spell "mindless corporate hegemony" yet, so I'd let it slide.
