Long time no post

sabrinamariBecause this part of the year is packed for academic types, and this is still true for me.
Book progress is ongoing----a colleague has been reading chapter drafts and helping me reframe my argument. She lives in Newark, and she's a Latina social epidemiologist, so she has a tremendous ability to help me target what's important in the work and rethink how I'm I'm saying it.
I'm also in three family practices this week---that's always gripping and exciting. Some of what I'm learnng connects to my book thesis as well.
Still, I am eager to be done.
On other fronts, there has been progress: I just completed an exam for a 20-year term life insurance policy this morning, and as I understand it, I'm now covered in case I die. I never thought about this much before, but children mean that a dead parent's lost income *must* be replaced---and honestly, partners and spouses deserve the security of knowing that if they lose their love, at least there will be plenty of money to help them rebuild their lives. This way, the shock of loss does not have to be accompanied by the shock of impoverishment--so often the case.
I hate the thought that my family could be left to grapple with poverty in the midst of terror and grief.
