For my Blue Star friends and colleagues: this post isn't about whether or not to go beyond Dedication. This post is about the intense, driven momentum that so many of us experience (or have experienced) in working our way through a Craft degree system.

It's also about what Initiation doesn't mean, and whether a strong ritual Priest/Priestess has to Initiate at all.

As usual, your mileage may vary.

Expanded and reposted as an entry from a comment below.

The most powerful group I have ever been part of, until the Fires of Venus Keepers group, was my core coven of many years, Braided Stream. This group was composed of the same small group of people who remained bonded over 6+ years, with the occasional addition of a very few who came, stayed a for a little bit and moved on to other groups.

The core of Braided Stream was the single most united, powerful and courageous group of *Magicians I have ever encountered. We grew a group mind the likes of which I have never seen anywhere else, though I wonder if FoV may offer something exquisitely similar soon...

Our nickname was "The Bunny Borg": tender, tremendously loving and fiercely interwoven at the level of bodymind.

In this Craft discussion, I think I am using words in ways that only gesture at the meanings I intend.

"Conservative" and "orthodox" as descriptors for some of my colleagues are just not right. "Liberal" isn't the right label I'd select for myself in this context, either.

Let me try again, with more focus.

The Blue Star degree system differs significantly from that of other Wiccan systems, and training can take quite a long time. For us, the process looks like this:

Not Striving

The magnificent Tao is all pervading...
all creatures abide with it and grow,
none are excluded from it.
When its work is done, it does not demand merit.
It nurtures all things, but does not rule them...
Therefore, the wise does not endeavor to be great.
Hence, his attainment is great.

Simply Being

He who knows men is clever;
He who knows himself has insight.
He who conquers men has force;
He who conquers himself is truly strong.

He who knows when he has got enough is rich...
And he who dies but perishes not enjoys real longevity

This is the first of a series of posts created for some of the Priests and Priestesses with whom I work in Blue Star, FoV and the Gardnerian tribes I have befriended. I want them to have a place to come for my answers to some of the questions they’ve asked me over the last few months. I’m also hoping that sharing the answers here will make it easier for them, since I’m not always around, and at the same time invite other Blue Star Initiates and tribesmen to share their own thoughts and answers to these questions.

I also hope these posts can answer the queries of several Blue Star students while explaining something about Blue Star to my Gardnerian friends. Please remember that I don’t have anything like an exhaustive or definitive set of answers. I just have my answers.

Please also note that I cannot claim that my approach is the original, best, true or right way to do Blue Star. In many ways, it is very different from that of others in my tribe whom I love and respect.  Know that I value the experiences, preferences and approaches of other Blue Star Initiates, including the teachings of our elders, and I have no interest in telling anyone what they should or shouldn’t do.

Finally, this language may not work for you. If it doesn’t, feel free to change and adapt it to your own needs and the language of your tribe. If “Priest” or “Priestess” doesn’t work for you, perhaps “Initiate” or “Guide” will. If that doesn’t work, I trust you to find your own words.
